KIDS TO THE RESCUE Grades: 4th-6th

  • Workshop Leads: Jyoti Vyas Registered Nurse
  • Workshop Description: In this workshop students will learn basic human physiology, healthcare roles, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and basic first aid skills. The class uses hands-on experience as you will work with stethoscopes, CPR mannequins, bandages, splints, “blood,” and more. The class is perfect if you’re interested in a career in health science or just learning invaluable, lifesaving skills. .
  • Subjects covered: Basic Human anatomy/physiology, health sciences, chemistry, physics, and life-saving skills.

  • Workshop Description: Satisfy your curiosity about your natural surroundings as we explore our different ecosystems, the oceans, the different kinds of forests, and the animal inhabitants in each ecosystem. Students investigate the stars and heavens and use maps to learn navigational skills. We will learn about wilderness safety so you can safely enjoy your outdoor experiences. The activities are fun and hands-on and will engage you to want to learn more about our natural world!
  • Subjects covered: Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, and Marine Sciene

  • Workshop Description: In this exciting workshop, students will learn about Mars while planning a Mars mission. The students will build a spacecraft, robots, a Mars colony, and small water rockets. Student projects will be performed in small teams and as individuals. Emphasis will be on fun, learning, team building, the use of some math, and some more fun.
  • Subjects covered: Aeronautics, Mechanics, and Physics.

  • Workshop Description: How does a magnet work? Why does a compass point north? Why can we turn on lights buy just flipping a switch? What is a circuit? Through hands-on experiments discover the answers to these questions and more! This workshop introduces students to the basic concepts of magnetism, static electricity, current electricity, and circuit components ranging from the resistor to the DC motor.

Learn about the Sun, planets, moons, stars, star clusters, nebula, galaxies, asteroids, and comets. This workshop includes hands-on projects to learn about constellations, telescopes, why we have seasons and eclipses, how big the solar system is and how far apart are objects in the sky, crater formation and much more.

ROCKS AND MR. NEWTON Grades: 5th – 6th

  • Workshop Lead: Mike Fergus, Engineer (The Boeing Company—22 year SSC Volunteer)
  • Workshop Description: In this workshop students learn about, collect, identify, and categorize rocks and minerals. We will even examine and prepare fossils. During the second part of the workshop, we’ll explore Newton’s laws using rockets, bridge building, miniature roller coasters, egg drops, and toys to demonstrate concepts such as inertia and momentum, force and motion, collisions, energy and levers.
  • Subjects covered: Geology and Physics.
