ELECTRONICS Grades: 7th – 8th

  • Workshop Lead: Oscar Ceron ( Boeing Engineer 5 year SSC Alumni), Jose Araneta (The Gas Company Engineer), Justin Lopez (The Gas Company Engineer)
  • Workshop Description: Students have fun while being introduced to electricity and basic circuits! Students learn to use a soldering iron by making clip-heads. Next, they construct a 9V power supply to learn about Ohm’s law. Projects include parallel resistors, dual LED blinkers, irritators, time delay circuits, SCR alarms, etc.
  • Subjects covered: Electronics and Mechanics.

HOW TO TRAP THE ROADRUNNER Grades: 6th – 8th

  • Workshop Leads: Peter Le, Engineer (The Gas Company—8 Year SSC Volunteer)
  • Workshop Description: Students explore ‘how things work’ through discussion and hands-on activities using common household items. Students perform experiments demonstrating various aspects of the Law of Conservation of Energy, including transfer of kinetic energy, conservation of kinetic energy and momentum in collisions, and work and potential energy. Students will uses the concepts to trap the Road Runner.
  • Subjects covered: Mechanics and Physics.

FORENSICS Grades: 7th-12th

  • Workshop Leads: To be Determined.
  • Workshop Description: Everybody loves a mystery! Here you will learn about forensics, the science of solving mysteries. Students will be exposed to the importance of physics and biology in Forensic Science. Students learn and practice observation, measurement, inductive/deductive reasoning, and analysis. Simple microscopic work, finger printing, and fiber analysis techniques will be studied. Detective teams evaluate foot prints, identify unknown substances, and learn about blood spatter evidence. Your team will then investigate a crime scene where you will put these forensic tools to use to catch a criminal and reveal their motive!
  • Subjects covered: Forensics, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanics, and Physiology.

FUNDAMENTALS OF FLIGHT Grades: 7th-8th

  • Workshop Leads: Kanu Vyas, Engineer (The Boeing Company—19 year SSC Volunteer) Van Richardson, Engineer (The Boeing Company—9 year SSC Volunteer)
  • Workshop Description: With an emphasis on FUN: students enjoy performing many simple experiments that demonstrate the fundamental principles involved with both lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air flight. We will build and fly a Rogallo-wing hang glider, as well as paper and balsa-wood airplanes, while learning about control surfaces and their functions by performing wind tunnel tests on wing sections you make yourself. You will also make water bottle rockets and hand-launched helicopters.
  • Subjects covered: Mechanics and Physics.
